App Development Cost in Australia 2026 (AUD)

Australian app quotes run from A$15,000 to well past A$300,000 for what sounds like the same brief. Here is what actually moves the number, what we charge, and where the hidden costs sit.

The short answer

In 2026, Australian agencies quote roughly A$15,000 to A$50,000 for a simple first version of an app, A$40,000 to A$150,000 for a mid-sized business app with a backend, and A$150,000 upward for complex platforms with real-time features, payments and integrations. At Zeebrix, a cross-platform iOS and Android app with a backend and admin panel usually works out at about A$45,000 to A$105,000 and takes 10 to 16 weeks. A complex app with real-time features runs about A$120,000 to A$270,000 over 16 to 24 weeks. We give a fixed-price quote in US dollars after a free discovery call, so these AUD figures are converted at roughly A$1.50 to US$1 and exclude GST.

If you only read one paragraph, read that one. The rest of this guide explains why two quotes for the same brief can be A$100,000 apart, which costs never appear on a quote, and how to spend less without ending up with an app you have to rebuild in a year.

What Australian agencies are quoting right now

Before writing this, we read the 2026 price guides published by a dozen Australian studios in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. The numbers cluster more than you would expect. A simple app or MVP lands between A$15,000 and A$50,000. A mid-range business app is A$40,000 to A$150,000. Complex or enterprise apps start around A$150,000 and several guides go past A$350,000. One Sydney studio prices a first version at a flat A$70,000 before you start. One Melbourne studio starts MVPs at A$18,000.

Why is the spread so wide? Mostly three things. Who is doing the work (a senior Australian engineer, a junior one, or an offshore team under a local project manager). What the agency counts as “an app” (some quotes include the backend, admin panel and app store release, and some quietly do not). And how much design and discovery happens before anyone writes code.

What makes up the cost of an app?

Clients often assume the screens they can see are most of the cost. They are not. On a typical A$60,000 project, the mobile app itself is a little under half the bill. The rest is the part nobody sees: the server that stores the data, the admin panel your team uses to run the business, and the testing and release work that gets the app approved by Apple and Google.

  • Discovery, user flows and design: 10% to 15% (A$6,000 to A$9,000 on a A$60,000 app)
  • The mobile app for iOS and Android: 40% to 45%
  • Backend, database, APIs and admin panel: 25% to 30%
  • Testing, bug fixing, app store submission and launch support: around 10%
  • Project management and weekly demos: included in the above at any serious agency, so ask if it is a separate line

How much do app developers charge per hour in Australia?

Senior developers at Australian agencies typically bill A$150 to A$250 an hour. Experienced freelancers charge A$90 to A$180. Offshore teams in South Asia or Eastern Europe quote A$30 to A$70 an hour, and that gap is where most of the price difference between agencies comes from. Many “Australian” agencies run a hybrid: local account management and design, offshore engineering. There is nothing wrong with that model when it is disclosed, and plenty wrong with it when it is hidden.

Zeebrix runs that hybrid openly. Our Perth office is where you meet us, where your project is managed and where the accountability sits. Engineering is shared between Perth and our US team. Because we quote a fixed price for a fixed scope, the hourly rate becomes our problem to manage rather than your risk to carry.

The questions worth asking any agency: who exactly will write the code, can I meet them, who owns the code and the app store accounts when we finish, and what happens to my timeline when your team is asleep?

What hidden costs come with building an app?

These are the items that turn a A$60,000 app into a A$75,000 first year. None of them are large on their own. Together they are the difference between a budget that holds and one that does not.

  • Apple Developer Program: A$149 a year. Google Play Console: a one-off US$25
  • Hosting and database: A$100 to A$1,500 a month depending on users and whether you need Australian data residency (AWS Sydney or Azure Australia East)
  • Third-party services: maps, SMS, email, push notifications and payments. Stripe charges 1.7% plus A$0.30 on domestic cards, which adds up fast on a marketplace
  • Maintenance: 15% to 20% of the build per year. Apple and Google ship new operating systems every September and October, and something always needs updating
  • Privacy: once you hold personal information you need a real privacy policy and data handling that matches it. Budget a few thousand dollars for legal review if you are in health, finance or anything involving children
  • App store rejections: a first submission is often bounced. A good agency includes the resubmission; a cheap quote usually bills for it
  • Launch: the app being live and the app having users are different problems. Marketing is never in the development quote

Can the R&D Tax Incentive reduce the cost of building an app?

Often, yes. Under the R&D Tax Incentive, if your company has aggregated turnover under A$20 million, eligible research and development spending qualifies for a refundable tax offset of 43.5%. That is the corporate tax rate plus 18.5 percentage points, and because it is refundable, a company that is not yet profitable can receive it as cash. Companies over A$20 million get a non-refundable offset at a lower rate.

Two warnings. First, not everything in an app build qualifies. Ordinary feature development does not. Work that resolves genuine technical uncertainty through experimentation does, and in a typical app project that might be 20% to 60% of the engineering. Second, you must register the activities with AusIndustry within 10 months of the end of your income year, and your records need to show the hypothesis, the experiments and the results. We keep engineering notes in a format your accountant can use for this, and we recommend you talk to an R&D tax specialist before the project starts rather than after.

Seven ways to pay less without getting a worse app

Cheap quotes get expensive when the app has to be rebuilt. These are the savings that hold up.

  • Build once for both platforms. Flutter or React Native gives you iOS and Android from one codebase at roughly 60% of the cost of two native apps, and the quality gap has closed for almost every business app. We compare the two in Flutter vs React Native in 2026
  • Launch with one core job done well. Every extra screen in version one is money spent before you have learned anything from real users. Our MVP cost guide shows what a lean first version costs
  • Buy the boring parts. Login, payments, chat, push notifications and analytics all have excellent paid services. Custom-building them is where budgets go to die
  • Finish the design before code starts. Changing a screen in Figma costs an hour. Changing it in a built app costs a day
  • Insist on a fixed price for a fixed scope. Hourly billing moves the risk of estimates being wrong onto you
  • Phase the admin panel. Version one can often run from a simple internal tool while you prove the app works
  • Skip the custom animations and 3D in version one. They look great in a pitch and add weeks to a build

What we quote at Zeebrix, and why it is not the cheapest number you will get

We quote in US dollars because most of our clients are in the United States and Australia and we run one price list. The AUD figures below are approximate at about A$1.50 to US$1. Every project is quoted as a fixed scope and fixed price after a free discovery call, and the quote includes the backend, admin panel, testing, app store submission and a full handover of code and accounts. Our mobile app development service page lists exactly what that includes.

For example, we built Epic Water’s water management app in Flutter with a Firebase backend: one codebase for iOS and Android, connected to the client’s existing IoT devices.

You will get cheaper quotes than these, and some of them will be fine. What we are pricing in is a senior team, weekly working demos, tests on everything, and an app you can keep building on for years rather than one you quietly replace. If your project is mostly AI rather than a plain app, our guide to AI development cost in Australia covers those prices.

How to compare two quotes properly

Put the quotes side by side and check each of these. If a quote does not say, assume the answer is no and ask.

  • Is the backend, database and admin panel included, or is it just the app screens?
  • Is app store submission included, and who pays for the resubmission if Apple rejects it?
  • Is the price fixed, and what happens when the scope changes?
  • Who owns the code, the app store accounts and the cloud account at the end? It should be you, from day one
  • How many weeks of post-launch bug fixing are included?
  • Is GST included or on top? Most agency quotes exclude it
  • Who will actually build it, where are they, and can you speak to them?

Frequently asked questions

How much does a simple app cost to build in Australia?

A simple app that does one job well, with a light backend, typically costs A$15,000 to A$50,000 in 2026. At Zeebrix a cross-platform app with a backend and admin panel starts around A$45,000, because we include the parts that cheaper quotes often leave out.

How long does it take to build an app?

A focused first version takes 10 to 16 weeks from kickoff to app store release. Complex apps with real-time features, payments or several integrations take 16 to 24 weeks. Design and discovery add two to three weeks at the start and usually save more than that later.

Is GST included in app development quotes?

Usually not. Most Australian agencies quote exclusive of GST and add 10% on the invoice. Check the quote, and if it does not say, ask. Our quotes are issued in US dollars and exclude GST.

Do I need both an iOS and an Android app?

In Australia the split is close to even, with iOS slightly ahead, so most consumer apps need both. With Flutter or React Native you get both platforms from one codebase for about 60% of the cost of two native apps. An internal app for a company that only issues iPhones can be iOS only.

Is it cheaper to use an offshore developer?

Per hour, yes, often by two thirds. Per finished app, it depends entirely on who manages the work. Problems with offshore builds are almost always communication and accountability problems, not skill problems. A local team that is accountable for a fixed-price result, with engineers wherever they happen to be, removes most of that risk.
