How Much Does It Cost to Build an App in the US? 2026 Prices

US agencies quote anywhere from $15,000 to well over $400,000 to build an app. Here are 2026 prices, hourly rates, the costs left off quotes, and what we charge.

The short answer

Most US agencies quote $50,000 to $250,000 to build an app in 2026, according to a June 2026 cost guide from Chop Dawg, with simple first versions starting near $15,000 and complex platforms going past $400,000. At Zeebrix, an iOS and Android app with a backend and admin panel costs $30,000 to $70,000 and takes 10 to 16 weeks, while a complex app with real-time features runs $80,000 to $180,000 over 16 to 24 weeks.

Our prices are fixed for a fixed scope, agreed after a free discovery call. Below we cover what US agencies charge, why two quotes for one idea can be six figures apart, and which bills arrive after launch. Budgeting in Australian dollars? Our Australian app cost guide has the AUD version.

What do US agencies charge to build an app in 2026?

We read the 2026 pricing guides that rank for this question. They agree on the shape of the market far more than on the exact numbers. Chop Dawg, a US studio, splits it into three tiers:

  • Simple app or MVP: $15,000 to $50,000, built over 2 to 4 months
  • Mid-market app with accounts, a backend and integrations: $50,000 to $150,000, 4 to 8 months
  • Complex or enterprise platform: $150,000 to $400,000 or more, 9 to 12+ months

What do the industry averages say?

Topflight Apps, in a September 2026 guide, gives a wider average of $50,000 to $350,000 and says a typical funded first version costs about $80,000. Lovable’s 2026 guide quotes Clutch pricing data from June 2026: the average agency project comes to $90,780 and takes 11 months.

Eleven months is the figure we would worry about more than the dollar amount. A long build means a long wait before real users tell you whether the idea works. You pay for every month of that wait.

One more Lovable stat worth knowing before you call anyone: GoodFirms found in 2026 that 78.2% of mobile app companies it surveyed quote an MVP at $50,000 or less. So if a quote for a first version arrives at $150,000, ask what is in it.

What exactly are you paying for?

App development cost is the total price of designing, building, testing and releasing an app, including the backend that stores its data and the admin tools your team uses to run it.

That last part trips people up. The screens on the phone are what you see in a demo. A quote that covers only those screens looks cheap right up until you ask where the user data lives.

Topflight Apps breaks a typical budget into phases. Development takes 50% to 70% of total spend, testing about 15% to 20%, and deployment $2,000 to $4,000. Its feature prices are handy for checking a quote line by line.

Here is how they add up on a modest brief. Login, push notifications, maps and three integrations come to roughly $18,500 to $35,000 at Topflight’s rates, before anyone pays for design, testing, the backend or the admin panel. A $15,000 quote for that brief should prompt some hard questions. The full list:

  • User login: $1,000 to $4,000
  • Push notifications: $1,500 to $3,000
  • Each third-party API integration: $4,000 to $6,000
  • Geolocation and maps: $4,000 to $10,000
  • An ecommerce module: $15,000 to $40,000
  • Accessibility compliance: $15,000 to $25,000

Why do US hourly rates vary so much?

Chop Dawg’s July 2026 guide to US rates puts junior developers at $60 to $100 an hour, mid-level at $100 to $150 and senior at $150 to $250. Designers bill $90 to $180, QA engineers $70 to $130 and project managers $90 to $170. An all-American team blends out at $120 to $250 an hour. A US-led team with some offshore engineers lands at $75 to $150.

The same guide cites the Bureau of Labor Statistics median wage for software developers, $133,080 a year, or roughly $64 an hour. The gap between that and an agency rate of $175 pays for benefits, management, sales and margin. That is normal. An agency sells a team that ships, and a team costs more than one salary.

Location matters too. Topflight Apps, citing GoodFirms, puts North American rates at $100 to $250 an hour and higher still in the priciest metros. Its offshore figures from Accelerance show senior engineers in South and Southeast Asia at $31 to $41.

Cheap hours do not guarantee a cheap app. A slow team at $40 an hour can bill more than a quick one at $150. A fixed price moves that risk onto the agency, which is where it belongs.

Do you need separate iOS and Android apps?

Chop Dawg prices a native iOS app at $30,000 to $250,000 and a native Android app at $35,000 to $280,000. Build both separately and you pay for two codebases, two rounds of testing and two release cycles for the life of the product.

A cross-platform React Native build comes in at $25,000 to $200,000, which Chop Dawg says is often 30% to 40% less than two native apps. For nearly every business app we see, one shared codebase is the right call. The exceptions lean hard on device hardware or need brand-new platform features on launch day. We compare the two main frameworks in Flutter vs React Native in 2026.

What costs never make it onto the quote?

A build quote covers the build. The items below land in your first year anyway, and we have named the source for each figure.

  • Developer accounts: Apple charges $99 a year and Google Play a one-off $25, per Lovable’s 2026 guide
  • Store commission on digital sales: Apple and Google take 15% on your first $1 million a year under their small business programs and 30% above that, per Chop Dawg. Physical goods and services are exempt
  • Hosting: Lovable estimates $70 to $320 a month for a small app at modest scale, and the bill grows with your user base
  • Card payments: Stripe charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per US card charge, according to Lovable
  • Maintenance: Chop Dawg says to budget 15% to 20% of the build each year, and Topflight Apps says about 25%. On a $60,000 app that is $9,000 to $15,000 a year
  • Legal: a privacy policy and terms reviewed by a lawyer cost $500 to $3,000, according to Lovable
  • Security testing: Topflight Apps prices a mobile penetration test at $7,000 to $35,000 per operating system, which you will want if you hold health or financial data
  • Marketing: none of these guides include it, and they are right not to. Getting users is a separate budget

Can a no-code or AI app builder replace an agency?

Sometimes, for the first step. Lovable sells an AI app builder with a $25 a month plan, and its guide estimates a small software product can run under $400 in its first year, plus payment fees. For finding out whether anyone wants your idea, that is a sensible place to start.

The same guide is candid about the limit. In an internal snapshot from May 2026, Lovable found about 1 in 10 of 87 projects it reviewed were production-ready. For regulated work it estimates agencies add 30% to 100% to a quote for audit, security and compliance.

Our take: use a builder to prove demand, then pay for a proper build once you need payments, real user data, integrations or a store listing. A client who arrives with a working prototype has already answered the riskiest question, and that makes the real build quicker to scope. Our MVP cost guide covers that stage in detail.

What does Zeebrix charge?

We quote every project as a fixed scope at a fixed price after a free discovery call. The price includes the backend, admin panel, testing, App Store and Google Play submission, and a full handover of code and accounts. On the call we go through who your users are, the one job the first version has to do well, and every system it must connect to. Then we send a written scope.

Our prices sit below the US agency averages quoted earlier for a plain reason. Our San Jose office runs client work and carries the accountability, and engineering is shared with our Perth team, which keeps the blended rate down without hiding who writes your code. You can see apps such as Petpass and Mindway on our case studies page. Current US prices:

  • Cross-platform mobile app for iOS and Android with backend and admin panel: $30,000 to $70,000, 10 to 16 weeks
  • Complex app with real-time features: $80,000 to $180,000, 16 to 24 weeks
  • AI MVP for a startup: $30,000 to $70,000, 6 to 10 weeks
  • AI feature added to an app you already run: $10,000 to $25,000
  • Support retainer after launch: from $2,500 a month

A checklist for comparing app quotes

Whoever you hire, line the quotes up and test each against this list. Where a quote says nothing, assume the answer is no until the agency tells you otherwise. If you want a fixed quote to hold up against the others, book a free discovery call and we will send back a written scope and price.

  • Does the price include the backend, database and admin panel, or only the app screens?
  • Is it fixed, and how are scope changes priced?
  • Is store submission included, along with a resubmission if Apple rejects the first one?
  • Who owns the code, the cloud account and the developer accounts? It should be your company from day one
  • How many weeks of bug fixing after launch are covered?
  • Who will build it, where are they based, and can you talk to them before you sign?
  • What will maintenance cost each month once the app is live?

Frequently asked questions

How much does a simple app cost to build in the US?

Chop Dawg’s 2026 guide puts a simple app or MVP at $15,000 to $50,000 from a US-based team, built over two to four months. At Zeebrix, a cross-platform app with a backend and admin panel costs $30,000 to $70,000, because we include the server, admin tools and store submission that cheap quotes tend to leave out.

How long does it take to build an app?

We deliver a focused cross-platform app in 10 to 16 weeks and a complex real-time app in 16 to 24 weeks. Industry averages run longer. Clutch data cited by Lovable puts the average agency project at 11 months, and Chop Dawg lists 4 to 8 months for a mid-market app.

How much does it cost to maintain an app each year?

Chop Dawg recommends budgeting 15% to 20% of the build cost per year, and Topflight Apps puts it nearer 25%. That covers operating system updates, security patches, bug fixes and small improvements. Hosting, store fees and third-party services come on top. Our support retainers start at $2,500 a month.

How much do app developers charge per hour in the US?

Chop Dawg’s 2026 figures put US junior developers at $60 to $100 an hour, mid-level at $100 to $150 and senior at $150 to $250. Blended rates for an all-American agency team run $120 to $250. The rate matters less than total hours, so compare fixed quotes for the same scope.

Is it cheaper to build one app for both iOS and Android?

Usually, yes. Chop Dawg estimates a cross-platform React Native build is often 30% to 40% cheaper than two separate native apps, and you maintain one codebase instead of two. Native still makes sense for apps that depend heavily on device hardware or on brand-new platform features.
